The Ultimate Guide to Vegan Sweets & Desserts in St. Louis (2026)
The STL Vegan Guide · Last updated August 2026
St. Louis has a serious sweet tooth. Gooey butter cake was invented here. So was the ice cream cone, if you believe the 1904 World's Fair legend. The good news for the rest of us: you no longer need dairy or eggs to eat like it.
This city now supports fully vegan bakeries, vegan ice cream churned from scratch, custom vegan birthday cakes, vegan donuts across the city, and a fully vegan French afternoon tea worth dressing up for. This guide covers all of it, organized by craving.
Why trust us? VeganSTL is the community hub of Project Animal Freedom, the nonprofit behind STL Vegan Market and 50+ vegan events a year in St. Louis. We've thrown a 100-person vegan ice cream social, we're hosting a vegan tea party this September, and many of the bakers below have sold out their tables at our markets. Where we have firsthand experience, we say so; every other listing was researched and verified in August 2026.
One editorial note: this guide favors St. Louis' independent businesses. National chains appear only in brief notes, and only where they fill a gap locals don't. And because bakery cases and scoop-shop menus change daily, check before you drive; fully vegan businesses are labeled, and at vegan-friendly spots we tell you what to ask.

St. Louis' Fully Vegan Bakeries & Bakers
Everything in the case. No label-reading, no "is the frosting vegan?" conversation at the counter. These businesses are 100% plant-based, top to bottom, whether they sell from a storefront, a market table, or an order form; each entry starts with how to actually get the goods.
SweetArt Bakeshop + Café
The elder statesman of vegan baking in St. Louis: Black-owned, beloved since 2008, and 100% plant-based at both locations. The rotating case runs cupcakes, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and cakes, with a full savory menu if you came hungry. The original bakeshop and café now lives at The Coronado, 3701 Lindell Blvd after years in Shaw, and SweetArt Too holds down City Foundry at 3730 Foundry Way, where the house rule applies: never leave the building without dessert.

Prioritized Pastries
Chef-owner Alex McDonnell built what Feast described as the first bakery in St. Louis dedicated exclusively to vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-friendly treats, and the salted chocolate chip cookie remains a signature. The Maplewood storefront closed in early 2026, but Prioritized Pastries continues through special orders and appearances at the Tower Grove Farmers' Market and other events; there's nowhere to simply walk in, so check the current schedule before heading out.

Clementine's Naughty & Nice Creamery
St. Louis' famous small-batch creamery keeps a real vegan lineup in the case at its locations across the metro, not a lonely sorbet in the corner. Vegan Donuts in St. Louis
St. Louis is a donut town. Here's where the plant-based ones live.
World's Fair Donuts
A Southwest Garden institution carried into its next era by the Strange Donuts team, with the classic case intact and a Vegan Cinnamon Twist on the current menu. A vegan donut with its own menu line, from a name that helped make this a donut town. Go early; donut shops reward the punctual.

Damn Fine Hand Pies
Don't let the name fool you: alongside the hand pies, this Shaw bakery runs one of the strongest recurring vegan donut selections in the city. The lineup rotates through vegan cinnamon sugar, vegan apple fritters, and vegan sourdough brioche donuts, and the bread program includes a vegan country loaf and an olive oil and sea salt focaccia. They started as a Tower Grove Farmers' Market stall, and it shows in the ingredients. Closed Tuesdays; order online for first pick before things sell out.

Kris Miss Bake Shop
Yes, again. The vegan, gluten-free donuts at Kris Miss belong in this category on merit, not just as a footnote to the cakes. See the full entry in the bakery section above.
Vegan Cookies in St. Louis
The chocolate chip cookie test is where vegan baking wins converts, and St. Louis passes it repeatedly. Prioritized Pastries' salted chocolate chip and The Vegan Cake Spot's lineup (both above) lead the fully vegan field. Beyond the bakeries:
Seedz Cafe bakes its vegan chocolate chip cookies in-house from scratch, the right ending to any meal at one of the city's most beloved plant-based restaurants (full entry below). Whisk on Cherokee Street marks its vegan items clearly, and the current case includes a vegan chocolate chip cookie and vegan, gluten-free raspberry thumbprints (full entry below). Protagonist and Antagonist in Soulard keep house-baked vegan pastries in rotation (full entry below). Pieces, Soulard's board game bar and restaurant sharing Antagonist's 1937 police-station building, keeps its cookie lineup fully vegan, so every seat at the game table gets dessert no matter the dietary spread. And for the 11 p.m. emergency, our one late-night chain exception: Insomnia Cookies' St. Louis stores carry vegan cookie options; exact selection varies.
Vegan Cakes & Cupcakes: Birthdays, Weddings & Special Occasions
Nobody should sit through their own birthday with no cake. For fully vegan custom work, start with Kris Miss Bake Shop (vegan and gluten-free, natural dyes only) and The Vegan Cake Spot (decorative custom cakes and cupcakes; order at least two weeks ahead, with rush fees for anything faster). SweetArt takes advance cake orders, with payment due at least 72 hours ahead; they keep it simple and don't do custom decoration work. For a fully vegan wedding or event cake with allergy-friendly credentials, Prioritized Pastries takes special orders year-round. And in North County, Made. by Lia in Old Town Florissant takes special orders for vegan cakes, subject to availability (full entry below).
Among mainstream St. Louis bakeries, The Cup in the Central West End keeps a dedicated vegan cupcake selection, including a vegan chocolate cupcake; quantities are limited, so go early or call ahead.
Call ahead for anything special-occasion; small bakeries sell out and custom slots fill fast.
Vegan Afternoon Tea & French Pastries
La Pâtisserie Paris
A luxury French pâtisserie in historic St. Charles offering a fully vegan afternoon tea experience: tiered trays, delicate pastries, vegan clotted cream, the whole ritual. It's special-occasion vegan dining of a kind St. Louis simply didn't have until recently. We love it so much we're hosting our own vegan tea party there on September 20, 2026: reserve your seat here.
524 S Main St, Suite 3, St. Charles, MO 63301
La Vie French Café
The café side of St. Charles' French plant-based story, below street level on historic Main Street: vegan croissants, crêpes, macarons, and French onion soup. The menu remains plant-based throughout, including its meat- and cheese-style dishes, with one exception: a dairy cheese fondue offered as part of the fondue experience. That single exception keeps it off our strictly-100% list; the pastry case alone justifies the trip.

Vegan Sweets With Your Coffee & Tea
Protagonist Café + Antagonist Café
Soulard's storybook café pair bookends the neighborhood: Protagonist (est. 2019) on the north end, and Antagonist (est. 2024) on the south, in a 1937 art deco former police station where you can sip a latte in an actual jail cell. Antagonist houses the bakery that supplies both cases, and house-made sweet and savory vegan pastries rotate through, with vegan custom cakes and pies by order. The rare neighborhood café program where the vegan option isn't an afterthought.

Fiddlehead Fern Café
Shaw's beloved women-owned café has been all-vegetarian from the start, with a plant-forward menu (the vegan Pompeia Caesar is a house classic) and a pastry case that takes vegan baking seriously; the program has even turned out vegan aquafaba macarons. A second location, Fern Grove, opened in The Grove in 2026. Ask what's vegan in the case today.

Vegan-Friendly Bakeries Worth Knowing
These aren't fully vegan businesses, but they treat vegan baking seriously enough to earn a place in your rotation. One general tip: vegan items here share an oven and a case with everything else, so if cross-contact matters to you beyond ingredients, ask.
Whisk: A Sustainable Bakeshop
A sustainability-first, woman-owned bakeshop on Cherokee Street's Antique Row since 2012, with clearly marked vegan items in the daily case. Right now that means a vegan chocolate chip cookie, vegan and gluten-free raspberry thumbprints and banana chocolate chip muffins, and vegan whoopie pies, alongside a rotating cast. Open Friday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until sell-out; the website lists Thursday hours inconsistently, so call before a Thursday trip. They'll happily tell you what's in the case and even hold items for you. Note: Whisk is not currently taking custom orders.

Made. by Lia
Old Town Florissant's craft bakery comes with television credentials: owner Lia Weber won TLC's Next Great Baker before opening her own storefront in 2020. The case keeps rotating vegan and gluten-free options daily, including vegan donuts in flavors like cinnamon sugar and chocolate espresso, and vegan cakes can be special-ordered subject to availability. North County's best answer for plant-based sweets, with coffee, tea, and patio seating to match.

Vegan Chocolate & Candy
Kakao Chocolate
Maplewood's all-natural artisan chocolatier hand-dips everything in small batches, with no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives, and keeps vegan options among its truffles and confections. Important: most of the case is not vegan (dairy and honey appear throughout the lineup), so ask the staff which chocolates are plant-based; they know their case cold.

Also on Our Radar
A few names come up in the St. Louis vegan-sweets conversation that we haven't fully confirmed for this edition: Mochiatsu (mochi donuts; vegan status varies), Spoonful Dessert Cafe, and The London Tea Room (newly reopened in DeBaliviere Place; its previous location served a fully vegan afternoon tea, and we're confirming whether the new one does). Know something current about any of them? Tell us and we'll update the guide.
Vegan Sweets at STL Vegan Market & Local Pop-Ups
Some of the best vegan sweets in St. Louis don't have a storefront: they have a folding table and a line. STL Vegan Market, run by Project Animal Freedom, brings together dozens of local vegan vendors each season, and the dessert tables go fast. Kris Miss built its following at markets before opening its shop; Prioritized Pastries returned to its farmers'-market roots after closing its Maplewood storefront; Damn Fine Hand Pies grew from a market stall into a Shaw storefront. The next great St. Louis vegan bakery is probably taking cash and compliments at one right now. Check our events calendar for upcoming market dates, ice cream socials, and dessert-heavy meetups.
