Letters to a New Vegan Book Club Meetup, an animal rights book club based in St. Louis, Missouri, and run by Project Animal Freedom

💌📚❄️ Join us for the final 2026 meeting of The Uncaged Page, St. Louis’ only vegan book club, as we discuss “Letters to a New Vegan,” a pocket-sized anthology of advice, encouragement, and support from Lantern Publishing & Media!

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and the end-of-year holidays are rapidly approaching. Holidays are complicated in a carnist culture, full of joys, sorrows, and everything in between. This month, we gather for encouragement, strategies, and support to navigate them together, drawing on the wisdom of others who have walked the path.

Edited by Melissa Tedrowe and Justin Van Kleek in the spirit of Rilke’s “Letters to a Young Poet,” this modern-day handbook collects 32 letters, chosen from hundreds submitted, from activists and movement leaders who have followed the vegan path for years, including PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk, United Poultry Concerns founder Karen Davis, and “Main Street Vegan” author Victoria Moran.

Funny, fiery, and tender, the letters offer hard-won wisdom on:

  1. 🍽️ facing family dinners, awkward questions, and well-meaning relatives

  2. 😔 feeling isolated in a world that doesn’t yet share your values

  3. 💔 carrying the grief of what you know alongside the joy of how you now live

  4. 🔥 staying the course when the newness wears off and burnout creeps in

  5. 💚 and rediscovering why you chose this path in the first place

Whether you went vegan last week or twenty years ago, this book was written with you in mind: to spark, steady, and renew your commitment to a kinder way of living.

As The Uncaged Page vegan book club, we seek to liberate our hearts and minds from the prejudices that bind us, to liberate our nonhuman friends from captivity and exploitation, and to liberate our world from injustice, one page at a time.

The Uncaged Page Book Club is for you if you:

  • 💚 enjoy learning more about veganism, animal rights, and social justice

  • 🧠 desire stimulating conversations about thought-provoking issues connected to animals

  • ✊ want to help animals by educating yourself about their plights, effective activism, and much more

A project of Project Animal Freedom, this initiative takes place at Adina’s Vegan Cuisine on the third Wednesday of the month every month. Missed a meeting or two? No problem! Each month’s book stands on its own, so newcomers are always welcome. And if you’re new to veganism yourself, there has never been a better month to join us.

At just 148 pages, the book is a quick read cover to cover, but if you’re short on time, read whichever letters speak to where you are on your journey and come ready to share the one that stuck with you most (extra credit if you write a letter of your own to a new vegan!).
